- Here's something you might have heard before: A modest proposal to hold presidential primaries and caucuses in all fifty states and territories on the same day, and to amend the constitution so that the president is directly elected by a pluraity of the popular vote in the general election.

- Now that the US and its allies are in Iraq, they have
no choice but to deal with the long-suppressed hostilities amongst the
Shia, the Sunnis and the Kurds. They may as well make up for their
neglect of Rwanda ten years ago, when they did nothing to stop the
massacre of 800,000 people by Hutu extremists in just 100 days.

- My Journal:
2002 to 2004
- Here
is an excerpt of my handwritten journal, covering trips to Switzerland,
northern Scandinavia, Australia and New Zealand between 2002 and
2004. The text, transcribed
for legibility, is unedited except for spelling (with some British
affectations intact). Some photographs here do not appear in the
gallery.

Landscape
composition techniques
A landscape
photographer establishes a sense of place by interpreting the sight of
mountains, lakes, forests and buildings as a composition of vectored
lines, scaled proportions and tonal contrasts confined to a
two-dimensional space. Some basic techniques are demonstrated
here. |

a trip
This is my modus

They may not be
state-of-the-art or provide the most performance for my money, but
I like them just fine.

Not just another homemade meal -- Even here, in
the Asian culinary mecca that is Los Angeles, a truly respectable serving
of classic nigiri sushi is as rare as it is costly. If you can find
a market that offers the requisite ultra-fresh ocean fish, you may as well
make them yourself.
For this ten-piece set, I spent $14 on about 1 lb
of sashimi-quality fatty tuna and king salmon filets, which I rinsed
thoroughly with filtered water. Steamed rice, at room temperature, is
mixed with rice vinegar and furikake (finely-particulate mixture
of dried fish meat, roe, sesame
and seaweed, commonly tossed over rice) before it is shaped into
thumb-sized rolls by hand. A small wad of wasabi (horseradish) is applied
to each roll before it is dressed with a generous cut of fish. Chopped green
onions and more furikake are sprinkled over the sushi prior to a light
dousing of soy sauce. Finally, this fabulous course is served with green
tea and thin slices of pickled sweet ginger.
Photo on left was taken with a Nikon D100 and a f/2.8
20mm D lens; photo on right was taken with the same camera and a f/2.8
60mm D lens.
