Milford Sound, New Zealand

As eagles fly -- These stunning aerial vistas of the Milford Sound and its immediate environs were seen from aboard one of the birds operated by the Milford Helicopters Ltd. Harrison Valley is flown past at left, with Lake Never Never spotted in the distance.

I was expecting a gentle flight, like the one I took over Mt Cook and Franz Josef Glacier two years ago. What I did not realize was that the winds over the Sound were very unstable, as the colder layers of air from the icy tops rushed down to collide with the warmer air near the surface.

Our skillful pilot, Snow Mullally, was unfazed, but my head felt as though it belonged to someone else's neck.

These photos were taken with a Nikon D100 and a Nikon f/2.8 20mm D lens.
