Basel Cathedral -- Now undergoing major renovation, the cathedral is nevertheless quite accessible to visitors, who can approach the altar and apse to admire its long history. The rumbling I heard was not the organist testing the pipes -- they were not due until a week later -- but construction workers with their jackhammers, ever rebuilding the church since a thousand years ago.
