A Neighborhood Treasure -- Driving into
the gritty south-central neighborhood of Watts can be intimidating to an
outsider, but it needs not be so. The friendly locals gave me directions to this
unique cultural monument, protected by tall steel fences and surrounded by
small, old dwellings. The site, now a state historical park, was
especially welcoming on this particular weekend, as jazz musicians entertained
the crowds from all over the city, and the stalls sold samples of African-Creole
art and cuisine. It was a sweet respite from the solemnity immediately following
the terrorist attacks of 11th September, though one was still reminded of such
by the red, white and blue worn by the many visitors.
