      The Bridge of Sighs -- Not until the Tower of London, the Bastille and Alcatraz Island played their parts in history has a piece of penal architecture been so romanticized.  For all its outward beauty, this span is simply that which connects the Prigioni Vecchie (old prison) to the Prigioni Nuove (new prison), the latter of 16th-century vintage.
